James P. Deavor

Dr. James Deavor began serving as associate dean of the School of Sciences and Mathematics on November 1, 2010. Jim served as chair of the chemistry department since 1995 - 2009, except for the 2001-2002 academic year when he served as interim dean. During 2009-2010 he again served as interim dean of SSM. Jim, a member of the College of Charleston faculty since 1983, received his bachelors of science in chemistry from Mercer University and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He did post-doctoral work at the University of Florida in the laboratury of J.W. Winefordner. His research interests are atomic and molecular spectroscopy and chemical education. He is currently the campus PI for the NIH SC-INBRE grant. In 1991, he was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award from the College and in 2002 he received the Distinguished Advising Award. He is a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Chemistry Fraternity, the American Chemical Society, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and the South Carolina Academy of Science. Currently he serves as the secretary-treasurer of the South Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society.
